5 Fantastic Facts About Sea Turtles

Sea Turtles Have Been Around For a really, REALLY long time!

The oldest sea turtle fossils date back to about 150 million years ago.  That makes them 85 MILLION years older than dinosaurs! The seven species that can be found today have been around for about 110 million years.  This makes them one of our most ancient creatures.

Females can lay up to 150 eggs in one nest

Depending on the species sea turtles lay between 70-150 eggs at a time.  These amazing nests cover coast lines spanning the continent. In Florida for example, sea turtles annually make between 40,000 and 84,000 nests

They can hold their breath for a VERY long time!

Depending on their activity sea turtles can stay underwater unimaginable lengths of time. At rest or asleep they can avoid the surface for between 4-7 hours!  in comparison , the average human can hold their breath for between 30 seconds to 2 minutes!

A Sea Turtles gender is determined by the temperature of their nests

Warmer environments tend to produce for female sea turtles, whereas more males with hatch from cooler surroundings. The journey from nest to sea is the only time the male hatch lings with ever spend on land.

They REALLY love to swim!

Most sea turtles travel hundreds or thousands of miles during migration. But the leatherback turtle is the record holder traveling u to 10,000 miles. That is almost halfway around the world!  These amazing turtles cross the entire Pacific Ocean from Asia to the West Coast of the US.
